Return to the FrontPage Quarterly Topic for Jan-Mar of 2007 Please feel free to email Keri or add your own resources and experiences to this page. The more we all share, the more we will all learn. The websites below, talking to other librarians and my own experience have suggested that the best ways to outreach are not to make assumptions about the backgrounds of the Latinos in your community, as they can be quite diverse, and to involve them in program planning. A good place to begin is by taking a few minutes to talk to any Spanish speaking patrons who regularly come to the library. Ask them what programs they would like to see and if they know anyone who might be interested in translating storytimes or other programs if you do not speak Spanish yourself. Local schools are also a good resource to find out if any Spanish language outreach programs already exist in your community that you could partner up with. Here are links to a few websites that may contain additional helpful information.
Return to the FrontPage Quarterly Topic for April-June of 2007 Evaluate & Prioritize Before you set out asking for help, you need to have a clear assessment of your current services and clear goals about where you would like your program to be. For example, are there any events no longer well attended that you could cancel or reschedule? Are there specific services you may or may not yet offer that are particularly high in demand? Are there any other community groups that provide similar services? If so, and there is a need for more of the same, you could benefit from their experiences and emulate, or if there is not enough demand to duplicate, let the other group handle that service, thereby leaving your staff more time to focus on other duties.
